 CAPACITY PLANNING
Home > Services > Capacity Planning
This service is offered for z/OS, Unix, Linux and Windows environments.
The Capacity Planning activity is focused to identify the needed amount of power to host the projected workloads; following the balanced systems methodology and evaluating the historical evolution of some “inter resource” indexes, indications on the needs of the other fundamental system resources (memory, I/O, etc.) are also provided. We don’t project response time using models, because we believe that if you plan the right amount of resources then response time is essentially a tuning issues.
The activity is divided in the following steps:
Phase 1: Historical data analysis
• Growth trend of CPU power in the different production environments analyzed;
• Growth trend of productivity (throughput);
• Identification of the correct indexes and of their reference values to allow the comparison of different resource utilization ( CPU, memory, I/O, etc. ) through the balanced systems methodology.
Phase 2: Definition of growth scenarios
• Evaluation of the natural (or physiological) growth in the last period ( 1 to 3 years ) and estimate of the future natural growth.
• Estimate of the planned growth for the next 1-2 years due to new applications, technology and architectural changes, and modification of existing applications.
Phase 3: Definition of the “baseline”
• Identification of a representative period.
• Evaluation of the utilization level of the resources.
• Evaluation of the eventual latent demand.
Phase 4: What-if analysis and Reporting
• Design of future scenarios and resource forecasting.
• Production of the final document.
